The TipTopTemp concept takes shape.
Early development of the temperature responsive grill damper concept begins, and TipTopTemp is presented at the Minnesota Inventors Congress.
TipTopTemp grew from an effort to control grill temperature without relying on a fan, batteries, wires, or an app.
The TipTopTemp concept dates to 2012, when development began on a temperature responsive flow regulator for grills and smokers. The original patent work described the same basic idea that still defines the product today: use temperature to move a damper and regulate airflow mechanically.
TipTopTemp was also presented at the 2012 Minnesota Inventors Congress. From there, the product found its way onto Weber kettles, Weber Smokey Mountains, Akorns, ceramic kamados, offsets, drums, and other grills and smokers.
Different grills required different mounting bands, clips, gaskets, and adapters, but the controller itself stayed deliberately simple. The current TipTopTemp continues that approach with a bimetal mechanism and interchangeable mounting accessories.

Customer comments and grill community discussions span kettles, WSMs, Akorns, kamados, offsets, and other charcoal grills and smokers.
TipTopTemp receives first place in the BBQ Tool/Accessory category in the National Barbecue & Grilling Association Awards of Excellence.
The current TipTopTemp is made in the USA and keeps the same core idea: a heat responsive damper with no powered fan or electronics required.
TipTopTemp received first place in the BBQ Tool/Accessory category in the National Barbecue & Grilling Association’s 2022 Awards of Excellence.
The recognition fits the product’s original goal: make charcoal temperature control simpler without adding another powered system to the grill.
