How It Works

A mechanical damper that responds to heat.

TipTopTemp™ is a self adjusting mechanical top damper for grills and smokers. The TipTopTemp damper changes the flue airflow powered by the grill's heat-instead of using a powered fan forcing air to the coals.

The Mechanism

Heat moves the bimetal element.

The TipTopTemp bimetal coil moves as its temperature changes. That movement is connected to the damper, so a temperature change produces a physical change in the flue opening.

As the grill or smoker warms and cools, the mechanism moves with it. The goal is not to create heat with electronics, but to make small airflow corrections at the top vent using the heat that is already there.

Grill or smoker heat changes→Bimetal element moves→Damper position changes→Exhaust airflow changes

See It Move

The movement is slow by design.

Watch the damper move as temperature changes. The movement is gradual, so the video starts at 2× speed. Switch to normal speed or 4× speed whenever you like.
